SO, you wanna make a podcast?

Hey Buds, Sam here!

Today I want to share with you guys the process and research that I did to start our podcast. I’m going to fill you in on what programs I use, why I like them, why I don’t like them, and just some recommendations overall for getting started. The best (and worst) part about this is that we are not sponsored by anyone! So, it’s just one broke bitch to another on the most cost-effective way to start a podcast!

  1. Microphones

Of course, there are A LOT of microphones to choose from. I personally looked for the cheapest option that was good quality (broke bitch, remember?). I chose the Blue Yeti Nano. The Yeti is only a USB microphone, and in order to adjust the gain (volume) on it, you need to download the Blue Sherpa App…The downside? Blue Sherp SUCKS! When paired with Audacity you need to uninstall the app, then restart your computer. IF Blue Sherpa is still installed when you start recording there will be a clicking sound the ENTIRE time.

If you don’t want to go through all this hassle, you can just get a microphone that comes with a condenser and not have to worry about it. But the Nano is a cheap, good-quality option if you are just getting started. If we try any new microphones I’ll be sure to update you all!

  2. Audacity ® | Free, open-source, cross-platform audio software

Audacity is completely open-source (FREE to use and download). There are a lot of different effects that can be done to the audio and you use the app to directly record. It is super simple for basic use. However, if you are going to be using the Blue Yeti Nano microphone, or any USB microphone, you’ll want to get VoiceMeeter. Voicemeeter is also an open-source platform that combines the audio of 2 USB mics into one voice line on Audacity.

  3. Recording and Episodes

The most important piece of knowledge I’d like to drop on you is “be VERY honest with yourself!” The time required to research, record, and edit is all-consuming. When Ozzy and I record, we can sometimes go up to an hour and a half. Then editing can take anywhere from two or three hours. I would recommend that before you publish your first episode, make a little stockpile, so you can stay ahead of the game and not have to worry about scrambling to get caught up with the work. We learn from experience 😅.

  4. Anchor

So, you’ve used Audacity, you’ve recorded your first episode (or several), and you’re ready to publish…but how the hell do you get everything on all the platforms? Use Anchor. Anchor can help you distribute to multiple platforms without having to worry about uploading to each and every platform individually. The website is extremely user-friendly and the support is quick and prompt.

Buds, we are here to help you. If you guys have any questions you can shoot us an email at kushandcrime@gmail.com.

As always, Stay Safe & Stay Lifted ❤️

-Sam
